3. We have been building in Haiti for 26 years. All our homes (and all 50 of our staff) survived the earthquake. And we have staff in neighbouring countries poised to help.

4. We’re no strangers to reconstructing after disasters. This is Bandah Aceh in Indonesia, immediately after the 2004 Asian Tsunami

5. And this is what Bandah Aceh looks like now, These are all homes built with the help of Habitat for Humanity. In all, we built or repaired 25,000 homes after the Tsunami.

6. 12 th January – Haiti suffers its biggest earthquake for 200 years

7. Up to 200,000 people died, and an estimated 1 million survivors are in immediate need of shelter

8. Badly constructed homes collapsed, increasing the death toll substantially

9. Survivors are forced to sleep in the open…

12. In 2008, over 50,000 Haitian homes were damaged or destroyed by hurricanes.

13. If hurricanes can cause as much damage as this to concrete buildings and roads...

14. ...what damage will they do to earthquake survivors, living in tents and shelters made of sheets?

15. Habitat for Humanity URGENTLY needs your help to help them. Our plan is to rebuild in three stages:

16. We have established a new temporary base from which to oversee reconstruction projects STAGE 1: EARLY RECOVERY

17. Stage 1: Recovery Starter Kits will be given out to enable communities to repair homes still standing, or construct robust temporary shelters ahead of the hurricane season.

18. Only 2% of Haiti remains forested – so most build materials will have to be bought in. STAGE 2: REHABILITATION AND CLEARUP

19. So Habitat for Humanity will organise community groups to clear debris and recycle any salvageable build materials.

20. Participants will be paid in cash, enabling them to earn an income and begin to regain their independence and rebuild their lives.

21. Resource Centres will be set up to identify and provide for gaps in the local supply of housing materials, architectural, finance and construction skills and address them in ways that support local livelihoods. (This is a Resource Centre in Indonesia after the 2004 Tsunami). STAGE 3: RECONSTRUCTION AND RECOVERY

22. Destroyed homes will be replaced with Core Houses, small, permanent, disaster resistant homes that can be quickly built and to which families can make additions over time. Cost c. £1700 per house. This core house was built in Sri Lanka after the 2004 Tsunami.
