What happened when Muhammad died? Muhammad died in 632 Muhammad never named a successor, so the community had to find someone to take over for him The people decided to elect a caliph – Caliph: successor

Who led after Muhammad? “Rightly Guided Caliphs”: – Term refers to the Sunni belief that the caliphs followed Muhammad’s example – Consisted of the first 4 caliphs to lead after Muhammad: Abu-Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali Under the leadership of the 4 caliphs, the empire spread to include the cities of Damascus and Jerusalem in Syria, parts of Egypt and North Africa, and parts of the Persian Empire
