Definition Abstract art seeks to break away from traditional representation of physical objects. It explores the relationships of forms & colors, whereas more traditional art represents the world in recognizable images.

History From the Renaissance art aimed to be “figurative”. Figurative—art that attempts to reproduce an illusion of reality. By the end of the 1800’s artists wanted a different style of art to express changes in the times. US Civil War, changes in technology, science, & philosophy.
