Basics of Bible Study
2
Introduction Today we began a series of lessons entitled, “Basics of Bible Study,” wherein we focus on those qualities that are necessary for a proper understanding of God’s Word. This particular lesson serves as an introduction and overview of the entire series.
3
Right Attitude Divine truth must be treasured (Prov. 4:1-9; 23:23; Matt. 13:44). Divine truth may be understood (John 7:14-18; Eph. 3:1-5; 5:15-17). Divine truth must be obeyed (John 13:17; Col. 1:9- 12; James 1:22-25).
4
Right Approach Divine truth is communicated in Holy Scripture in various forms: Much of the text is historical narrative; large sections are exhortational and instructive; other portions are figurative. In order to comprehend the basic facts, one must ask the right questions of the text: who, what, when, where, how, why, etc. Above all else, consider the context.
5
Right Application Trust it (Prov. 3:5-12; 16:20). Obey it (Ezra 7:10; Heb. 5:8-10). Apply it (Matt. 13:9, 10-16, 43).
6
Conclusion Disaster awaits us if we reject the truth (Rom. 2:4- 11). Doom awaits us if we distort the truth (2 Peter 3:14-18). Therefore, let us be cautious and correct in our approach to Bible study. Remember the repeated admonition of the Lord Jesus, “He who has ears, let him hear!”
