Y11 Geography 1 Revision for Mocks What you will see and what you need to look out for!

2 Have your coloured pencils/pens ready Blue words = only use the diagram E.g where it says look at the diagram and then asks you to describe something – or asks what factors ‘purple words’ means define them at the start of when you use them With reference to named examples (or even when it does not but it is a 9 mark question) means case studies. E.g. in this case Manchester Red words or symbols ‘, imply ideas from more than one source are needed. E.g. what are the causes and effects of ……

3

4 1. River environments (a) Study Figure 1 which shows the distribution of average annual rainfall in Spain. It also gives information about Spain’s national water transfer plan. Very important – read what they tell you about the figure and then look at it really carefully before you begin answering

5 (i) Indicate: 1. the wettest area of Spain 2. the driest area of Spain (2) (ii) Draw a sketch map of the course of the River Ebro.(3) Label the location of:  the mouth  the upper course  the flood plain. Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple?

6 Here is my version of the answer

7 (iii) Describe the part played by the River Ebro in the national water plan.(3) (iv) What are the advantages of this national water plan?(4) (v) Give one possible effect the plan might have on the environment.(1) Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple?

8 (b) Now forget the figure unless they ask you to look at it again! But we are still dealing with the information from it (b) Rainfall in Spain was much below average in 2005. Describe what you think the water managers did in this situation. Nothing to do with Spain – this is the practical section: (c) Describe how data would be collected about water quality in a river. Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple?

9 (d) With reference to examples, explain why water quality varies from place to place.(9) Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple? This is a bit nasty! You have no case study about this, but you will have ideas about why water quality varies ( I hope) and may be able to give more general examples of where things happen. For example from the map on P23 of the book!

10 2. Coastal environments: (a) Study Figure 2(a) which shows a cliff coastline undergoing change. Very important – read what they tell you about the figure and then look at it really carefully before you begin answering

11 (i) State two ways in which the cliff face has changed.(2) (ii) Explain how wave erosion has caused these changes.(4) (iii) Explain why the following features occur on the present coastline:(6) 1. a wave-cut platform 2. a steep shingle beach. Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple? Lots of keywords to insert!

12 (b) Describe the swash and backwash of a wave.(2)  [Note: only 2 marks for 2 ideas so keep it brief] (c) (i) Study Figure 2(b) which shows the coastline close to the cliffs in Figure 2(a). Label B on Figure 2(b) and describe why the deposition is occurring here. (3) (ii) Describe a fieldwork study to investigate the beach profile at C. You may use diagrams to help your answer.(4) This is sneaky – as they said they were going to separate the fieldwork into a separate section!

13 (d) With reference to examples, explain how and why people try to reduce longshore drift along a coastline.(9) Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple? Which case study would you use?

14 4. Economic activity and energy: (a) Study Figure 4(a) which shows the factors influencing the choice of location of a new factory. (i) To which economic sector does Figure 4(a) refer? Primarysecondary tertiary quaternary

15 (ii) What is meant by the term world markets? [ One of the labels on the diagram]  When defining NEVER use a word in the question as part of the answer! (iii) Name an industry located close to its sources of raw materials.(1) (iv) Describe the advantages of an industry being located close to its sources of raw materials.(4)

16 (b) Study Figure 4(b). (b) Study Figure 4(b). It shows the scores a transnational company gave to eight key factors when choosing the location for a new factory.

17 (i) Complete Figure 4(c) below by: labelling the axes drawing the bars for transport and government policy.(3)

18 (ii) Suggest why this transnational company gave a high score to government policy.(4) (c) Describe how people’s views on the use of renewable and non-renewable energy could be investigated.(6) (d) In many HICs the nature of employment is changing. With reference to one HIC, describe and give reasons for this change. (9) Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple? Which case study would you use?

19 6. Urban environments: (a) Study Figure 6(a) which shows land use in Nairobi, Kenya.

20 typical locations (i) Name two typical locations of shanty settlement.(2) 1 2 (ii) Give one typical characteristic of:(2) 1. shanty settlement residents 2. shanty settlement housing. (iii) Briefly describe the term self-help housing. (1) (iv) Describe one difference between self-help housing and shanty settlement housing.(2) (v) What evidence is there on Figure 6(a) that the people of Nairobi live in areas according to:(4) 1. their income 2. their ethnicity? Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple?

21 (b) Study Figure 6(b) which shows an area of Nairobi. Which area of the city is shown by Figure 6(b)? Justify your answer.(4) Note: This does NOT ask you to refer to fig 6(a) as well – although you could do this profitably

22 (c) Describe how a fieldwork investigation of land use across an urban area could be planned and carried out.(6) (d) Explain why the CBDs of HIC and LIC cities are broadly similar.(9) Any sections to be coloured blue, red, green or purple? Which case studies would you use?
