© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Always follow these 3 steps when working genetics problems.

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Write the key. Information needed to write the key will either be stated in the problem or given. Determine the genotypes of both parents. 1 2 3 Solve the problem using a Punnett square.

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Each parent contributes a purple flower gene. Each reproductive cell contributes half of the parent’s genes to its offspring. Possible combinations of genes are shown in a Punnett square. Purple color is dominant over white. Both parents contribute a white flower gene. White flower color is recessive to purple; therefore, the offspring is white. One parent contributes a purple flower gene; one parent contributes a white flower gene.

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Yellow seed color is dominant over green. Each reproductive cell contributes half of its genes to its offspring. Possible combinations of genes are shown in a Punnett square.

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Purple flower color is dominant over white. Substitute letters for genes. P P PP PpPp pp p PpPp p P - purple p - white

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX How are these flowers different? Both flowers have the same physical appearance or phenotype: they are both purple. The flowers have different genetic makeup or genotype. PP PpPp PpPp PpPp PpPp

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Describe the phenotype of these peas.

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX A purple flower can be pure (homozygous) hybrid (heterozygous). or PP The phenotype is the same: both flowers are purple. PpPp The genotype is different: one flower is PP, one is Pp.

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX A white flower can be only be pure (homozygous). Why? pp

© 2006 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Follow these steps for every genetics problem. 1. Write the key. 2. Determine both genotypes (parents). 3. Work the problem with Punnett square. upper case = dominant trait lower case = recessive trait P = purple p = white Cross a pure purple flower with a white flower. PP x pp 1 2 3
