The Farsight Integrated Leadership Model TM The inner world of the leader can be thought of containing inner resources - our personality traits, key skills and abilities, motivators and emotional intelligence. Some of these are hard wired and extremely difficult to change or develop. Others, such as emotional intelligence, have been shown to be capable of development. We also develop throughout our lifetimes some core building blocks that we use to interpret the world and our place in it – these take the form of philosophies, beliefs & attitudes which in turn help us construct identity, meaning & purpose. All our leadership raw materials are here. Knowledge and understanding of this internal world is a vital element for any leader and the corner stone of self awareness. The Farsight Integrated Leadership Model TM 8 Leadership Drivers In the model we identify 8 Leadership Drivers that underpin leadership. These are the connectors that leaders use to translate their inner resources into leadership competencies. All 8 drivers contribute to the delivery of each leadership competence. The strength of these leadership drivers determines an individual’s capability to perform as a leader. Using Sir John Whitmore’s insight that “Problems can only be resolved at the level beneath that at which they manifest themselves” we can improve our capability to deliver leadership by working to strengthen these drivers. The Farsight Integrated Leadership Model TM 9 Leadership Competencies The model identifies 9 Leadership Competencies. Each addresses a specific element of leadership: These are the things that leaders ‘do’ in their delivery of leadership. The relative importance of these is dependent on the leader’s context and the extent to which they are done well or badly determines the quality of an individual’s leadership. Whilst many organisations define leadership competencies to describe desired leadership behaviours, the competencies defined here are generic and can be used to evaluate leadership in many different contexts.
