2 Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty Australian Government developed a comprehensive approach targeting the immediate impacts of the crisis on the poorest, while also strengthening the foundations of long-term global food security – Emergency food assistance – Increased funding for rural development – International collaboration to prioritise food security issues and pursue trade policy reforms. The initiative focuses on: – lifting agricultural productivity – improving rural livelihoods – building community resilience.

3 Achieve universal primary education Australia’s education assistance is focused on: – promoting equity (education for all) – improving quality – strengthening education systems in our bilateral partner – improve the functioning of national education systems to enable more girls and boys to complete primary school and progress to higher levels of education – improve the relevance and quality of education, including in vocational and technical education, so students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for life and productive employment.

4 Promote gender equality and empower women Australia’s aid program aims to promote gender equality and empower women in partner countries – Helped women get given economic opportunities – Helped more girls attend school – Helped women take on leadership roles – Helped improved the health and wellbeing of women and children – Helped women who were subjected to violence

5 Reduce child mortality Australia helps countries develop better quality, cost effective and community focused health systems that are sustainable and that lead to better health outcomes in the long term. There is a strong focus on targeting major causes of child and maternal mortality and morbidity – increasing the number of skilled health workers, including midwives, is essential in improving health outcomes – providing education and training support in a number of countries

6 Improve maternal health Concentrate on helping those people most in need, particularly women and children – targeting major causes of child and maternal mortality and morbidity The aid program also provides support in areas that underpin good public health systems such as national health policy development and planning, disease surveillance systems, and pharmaceutical supply and regulation. Increasing the number of skilled health workers, including midwives, is essential in improving health outcomes Australia is providing education and training support in a number of countries

7 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Concentrate on helping those people most in need, particularly women and children. 8 Ensure environmental sustainability Australia will continue to work closely with other donors, international organisations and developing countries to identify needs and effective responses in the areas of mitigation and adaptation. Various Initiatives, such as the Coral Triangle Initiative, to financially support the environment and those living in it

9 Develop a global partnership for development Address the special needs of least developed countries, landlocked countries and small island developing states Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non- discriminatory trading and financial system Deal comprehensively with developing countries’ debt In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries In cooperation with the private sector, make available benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications
