8 Fort Sumter (pg. 227) A fort guarding Charleston Harbor where the Civil War began. South gives Union a deadline to leave since CONFEDERATE land now; Lincoln doesn’t recognize the Confederacy & sends support troops Southern “victory” (Only one accidental casualty) U.S. Flag removed & hung in North to rally support – retuned in a ceremony at the end of the war (still in the museum).

19 Quickwrite ~ Was war inevitable?
Some historians believe that the Civil War was inevitable, that our country was on a path toward war from the onset of the introduction of slavery in the 1600’s & because of the differences between the northern & southern regions. Others feel that there were several things that could have been done to prevent civil war. Explain your opinion using specific details and vocabulary/people (5 min - highlight) from Ch. 12 and any previous chapters that apply.
