Opportunities and threats exist in all parts of the business model, especially, but not only, with regard to the customer experience. Moreover, opportunities and threats exist in the business model (impacting operations), while having an effect on the business model (impacting the bottom line). In other words, the implications of digital go beyond improvement or even transformation; they include getting into and out of businesses, creating new businesses and changing strategic postures. Reinventing Competitive Advantage in a Digital World ■ Long-term innovation cycles appear to influence all businesses, but within the technology space, the cycle time is much accelerated to no more than 10 years. As a result, there is a need to execute a dedicated business technology agenda. ■ History indicates that the true market leaders in each cycle rarely survive into the next cycle, their place often being taken by maverick startups born out of dissatisfaction with the current status quo. Your major competitor in 10 years (if you survive that long) probably doesn't exist today. To compete, you must actively set out to destroy the very business you helped build in its current form. ■ Against the backdrop of pervasive digitalization, practically every industry is now impacted by the advances in technology capabilities, deployment and usage. Technology-induced structural changes in your industry are a matter of when, not if — so setting technology change is a key component of strategy.
