Unicorn Indexing: A Behind The Scenes Look SCUUG 2002 Natalie Palermo Louisiana State University
2
What’s Behind the Scenes Indexes Variations Hypertext
3
Indexes Browse Keyword
4
Delivered Browse Indexes Author MESH Periodical Title Series Subject (rotated) Title
5
Browse Indexes Rotated: multiple postings of a phrase with each subfield beginning the phrase NEW ORLEANS LA HISTORY 18TH CENTURY HISTORY 18TH CENTURY NEW ORLEANS LA 18TH CENTURY NEW ORLEANS LA HISTORY Changes require Rebuild Headings and thus Rebuild Text
6
LSU Browse Index Changes Create new browse index, LOCAL_NUM, for 035 field Add to title browse index: 240, 246, 524 Add to subject browse index: 655
7
Keyword Index Policy Types Searchable Keyword Index Non-searchable Keyword Index Internal Synonym Keyword Index Synonym List Keyword Index
8
Searchable Keyword Single entries from bibliographic record Mapped to internal tags used by BRS For example, LSU added the following: 027, 035, 043, 088, 210, 243, 247, 351, 510, 524, 538, 541, 586, 653, 655, 752, 760, 773, 856 AUTI for name/title entries Posted 700|t, 710|t, and 711|t to AUTI
9
Non-searchable Keyword Used for sorting search results in the library catalog Does not represent an entry or group of entries for searching
10
Internal Synonym Keyword Defines which entries are searched when a given type of search is performed Creation, modification, and removal require changes to BRS equivalent field definitions Searches qualified by internal synonyms are more efficient Changes require Rebuild Text
11
Delivered Internal Synonyms IndexSynonymMARC Entries AuthorAU100, 110, 111, 700, 710, 711 SeriesSE400, 410, 411, 440, 490, 800, 810, 811, 830, 840 SubjectSU600, 610, 611, 630, 650, 651, 690, 691 TitleTI130, 245, 440, 730, 740
12
LSU Additions to Internal Synonym Keyword Indexes Add to title keyword index: 240, 246, 440, 490, 505, 524, 830, AUTI Add to author keyword index: 505
13
Synonym List Keyword Defines which entries are searched when a given type of search is performed Definable without requiring modifications to BRS configuration Less efficient search GENERAL is an example of a synonym list keyword index
14
Variations Each catalog format entry ID has its own browse and keyword variations Variations can be in addition to others or supersede others Variations can be based on: indicators subfields leading articles

Serial 780 Browse 1

Serial 780 Browse 2

23
Hypertext Subfields used in hypertext search Hypertext search types: Partial Exact Keyword
24
Hypertext Search Subfields For each entry ID, you can determine which subfields are included in a hypertext search To improve the likelihood of finding matching records, do not include subfields that narrow the search
25
Serial 246 Hypertext Subfields
26
Serial 780 Hypertext Subfields
27
Hypertext Configuration In WorkFlows, go to global configuration to set the hypertext search type In iLink, set the hypertext search type in the following environment variable: LIKESEARCHTYPE
28
Partial Hypertext Search Partial lookup in the browse index specified in first browse variation Builds an "OR" search string of the matched heading keys Returns the results identified to the point of the search string character limit
29
Partial Hypertext Search If the search string limit is met, you will get one of the following messages: iLink message: Results list truncated – too many terms WorkFlows message: Partial search results too long Delivered default value and best choice for most libraries
30
Exact Hypertext Search Exact lookup in the browse index specified in first browse variation May be the best choice for some large libraries
31
Keyword Hypertext Search Lookup in the keyword indexes Uses keyword index specified in first keyword variation Online help does not recommend this type
32
Hypertext Search Subfields In this example, all 780 subfields are included in the hypertext search: Journal+of+the+American+Medical+Association+0 002-9955+(DLC)+++07037314+(OCoLC)1480379 It’s highly unlikely that a match will be found for this search string
33
Hypertext Search Subfields In this example, only 780 |t is included in the hypertext search: Journal+of+the+American+Medical+Associ ation It’s very likely that a match will be found for this search string
