4 Ruled by Divine Right. Centre-point for legal authority of the realm (King = Chief Judge). Head of long-established social hierarchy. Unifying force in nation. French Society is called: Ancien Regime (Estates system) The King – Absolute Monarch

5 The King – (from: All you need to know about the French Revolution ) Louis XVI Louis XVI became King of France in 1774. He was a kind, family man, who married Marie Antoinette, an Austrian Princess. Louis had very few of the qualities that would have him made a good king. He was unintelligent, uninterested in politics, easily influenced and preferred to spend his time hunting and looking after his collection of watches. But he had become king at a time when France was becoming increasingly unstable. autocratLouis was an autocrat. That meant that he could do exactly as he liked. There was no Parliament to pass laws and no opportunity for people to complain. Louis simply appointed ministers and let them get on with running the country. When conditions became too bad for people to put up with, there were riots or even rebellions.
