Life Expectancy The number of years a person can expect to live Quality of Life the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. High quality of life can be a person’s goal. A goal is a result that a person aims for and works hard to reach.

3 Aspects of Health To achieve a high quality of life, a person must work hard to improve all aspects of health. The aspects of health that are important to overall well- being are Physical health Mental health Emotional/spiritual health Social health.

4 Physical Health O Refers to how well your body functions O Physically Healthy includes O Healthy diet O Regular exercise O Adequate sleep O Proper medical/dental care

5 Mental Health O State of being comfortable with yourself, others, and your surroundings O Mental Health includes O Alert mind O Learns from mistakes O Recognize achievements

6 Emotional/Spiritual Health O How you react to events in your life O Emotional/Spiritual Health includes O Anger O Optimism vs. pessimism O Relaxation O Sharing feelings with others

7 Social Health O How well you get along with others O Social Health includes O Making and keeping friends O Respecting other O Giving and accepting help O Healthy relationships with family and friends O Is it hard work?

8 A Continuum of Health Defining a Continuum a gradual progression through many stages between one extreme and another. A Health Continuum One end of the continuum represents poor health (illness). Movement Along the Continuum Many of the choices you make on a daily basis affect your position on the health continuum. The other end represents perfect, or ideal, health (wellness). Wellness is a state of high-level health.

When you are physically healthy you have enough energy to carry out everyday tasks.

You are emotionally healthy when the feelings you experience are appropriate responses to events. mental healthThe state of being comfortable with yourself, with others, and with your surroundings.
