Progressivism: Warm up. Why do you go to school in the fall time? (Should government restrict a child’s right to work.)

Progressivism- movement by Americans to make government more responsive to what people want (not businesses) and correct problems in American society (work conditions, poverty, equality)

4 Goals 1. ) Protect Social Welfare- “Social Gospel” said people should try to help the less fortunate *Fix poverty *Fix problems with industrialization (Low pay, dangerous conditions, child labor)

continued 2. Promote Moral Reform- improve people’s lives by changing negative lifestyles (alcoholism) *Prohibition- movement to criminalize (make illegal) alcohol

Create economic reform *End “Laissez-Faire”- idea that government should not regulate or interfere with business *Supported “Socialism”- idea that everything in society should be shared equally (pay, power, etc.) *Muckrakers- journalists who exposed corrupt business’ and political machines

continued 4. Efficiency- make work tasks easier and simpler *Increased the amount of goods produced which lower the price for consumers Example- assembly line at Ford (each worker had one task when assembling a car while the cars moved at a steady pace

Roosevelt and Progressivism Progressives wanted to… 1.) end political corruption and regulate big business. 2.) make government do what is best for the people. President Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to try to achieve those goals by increasing the role of the President.

Theodore Roosevelt Was Vice President, became President when President McKinley was shot. President Roosevelt-willing to compromise rather than achieve nothing. View of Government-President should lead (Congress was to slow). View on business-felt that when they became monopolies, business’ exploited (cheated) the public.

Theodore Roosevelt wanted regulation (rules) to prevent business abuses Coal Strike-Theodore Roosevelt worked with labor (workers) and owners to establish better hours and pay for coal miners.

Food and Drugs-Rules to protect people from harmful food and drugs The Jungle-book that described the filthy conditions in America. Slaughter houses and sale of mislabeled medicines. Meat Inspection Act-set rules for sanitary (clean) meat packing and government inspection of meat (GRADE A) Pure Food and Drug Act-forbid the sale of mislabeled or un-pure drugs

CONTINUED Conservation- Theodore Roosevelt loved the wilderness and wanted to preserve certain areas for the future. National Parks- set aside land not to be developed (Yosemite. Yellowstone WAS ALREADY A NATIONAL PARK, PRIOR TO ROOSEVELT.)

President Wilson and The New Freedom President Roosevelt wanted to regulate (set rules) on business, President Wilson wanted to break up monopolies.

President Woodrow Wilson Born in the South during reconstruction (prejudice, Christian), President of Princeton University. (smart) He was a reformer who enacted key progressive legislation (RULES) that we still have today.

Clayton Anti-trust Act Declared certain business practices illegal and legalized labor unions Importance- unions were now allowed to strike, picket, boycott, and collect money.

Taxes Before Wilson government raised most of it’s money through tariffs (tax on an imported good) Problem-monopolies used tariffs to prevent competition in business. 16 th (1913) set up a graduated income tax (larger incomes are taxed at a higher % than lower incomes). Importance-income tax is how government raises most of it’s money today.

Federal Reserve System Divided the nation into 12 districts, each district can PRINT IT’S OWN MONEY. Importance-allowed each area of the country to have access to $ (not just financial centers/ cities- NYC)
