4 Starter – complete the famous quote from President Roosevelt’s inaugural speech in March 1933? I pledge you, I pledge myself a New Deal for the American people.

5 What was nature of Roosevelt’s 1932 Presidential Campaign? Roosevelt argued that Hoover’s government has offered too little help, too late. Roosevelt’s campaign was helped by Hoover’s mistakes in handling the Bonus Army and his inactivity of helping people during the Depression. Roosevelt committed to a ‘New Deal’ for the American people. Although what exactly remained vague.

6 What vision did Roosevelt set out in his inaugural speech in March 1933? Roosevelt wanted to restore confidence and stated that his three most important tasks were getting people back to work, restore confidence in banks and the stock market and to provide relief for those in need. Roosevelt also outlined his New Deal for the American people. Roosevelt abandoned the policy of laissez faire committing federal money to projects across America.

7 How did Roosevelt try to sell his vision to the American people? Roosevelt knew that he had to win the confidence of the people quickly if they were to accept the changes he wanted to make. The first ‘Fireside Chat’ took place on 12 th March 1933 and focused upon why Roosevelt temporarily closed the banks. Roosevelt introduced a series of radio broadcasts called ‘Fireside Chats’ to explain the changes he wanted to make. They were called ‘Fireside Chats’ because of the informal style Roosevelt adopted.
