WHO IS TEDDY ROOSEVELT? Was William McKinley’s vice president until McKinley was assassinated. Saw the presidency as a “bully pulpit” and sought to influence the media and shape legislation. Enacted various progressive reforms known as the Square Deal.

TRUSTBUSTING Is created when one company buys/merges with multiple other companies creating a monopoly. Why is this a problem? Solution: Cracked down on monopolies, forcing some to break up.

1902 COAL STRIKE 140,000 coal workers strike demanding 20% raise, 9 hour work day, and the right to unionize. Mine operators refuse to listen. Why is this a problem? Solution: Forced the 2 groups to sit down and work out their differences.

REGULATING FOOD AND DRUGS Up until 1906, there were no rules regulating cleanliness in the food industry. Why would this be a problem? Solution: Meat Inspection Act: dictated cleanliness requirements and inspections.

FALSE ADVERTISING/IMPURE MEDICINE AND FOOD Before regulations, food and drug companies could advertise anything in regards to their products i.e. cure cancer, regrow hair, etc. Could also put anything they wanted in their products i.e. children’s medicine often contained opium, cocaine, or alcohol. Why might this be a problem? Solution: Pure Food and Drug Act: forbid selling of contaminated products and forced truthful labels.

CONSERVATION In the early 1900s, pioneer farmers leveled forests, plowed up prairies, and allowed cattle to overgraze. Lumber companies cut down trees. Cities dumped their waste wherever they wanted. Why is this a problem? Solution: Conservation: setting aside areas of land for natural use.

WHERE TEDDY ISN’T TOO PROGRESSIVE Racist upbringing- Roosevelt’s mother was a southern belle in favor of slavery. Failed to promote equality between whites and blacks. Did invite Booker T. Washington to the White House for dinner. Because Roosevelt fails to help African Americans, African Americans formed the NAACP. Wanted to create equality among the races Booker T. Washington
