HAND TOOLS TOPIC 2 EXTRA… CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON A TOPIC INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY- TIMBER ASSOCIATED THEORY

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS As the name suggests hand tools have no other source of power other than the strength of hand and arm muscles. Although hand tools were developed many centuries ago, many of them remain basically unchanged today, except perhaps for the composition of some of the parts. Correctly used, hand tools can be as accurate as machine tools, are often safer, and significantly quieter. State the correct name and give the uses for the following marking out tools

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLSMarking and checking angles of 90 0. Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools Try square.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLSMarking and checking angles of 45 0. Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools Mitre square.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLSChecking inside diameters Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools Inside calipers.Outside calipers.Dividers. Checking outside diameters Scribing circles & arcs, and stepping off distances.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLSMarking and measuring distances to one metre. Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools Folding rule.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLSTransferring angles or checking angles from a protractor Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools Sliding bevel.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLSMarking or checking any angle, and finding the centre of round stock. Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools Combination set. Separate components can be mounted on the rule, to perform various functions.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Lines can be drawn on timber with a pencil or marking knife. When should one of these be used in preference to the other? Pencil Marking Knife Laying out large or irregular shapes, and marking out joints. Marking sharp accurate lines across the grain of the timber. Marking Out Tools Marking Out Tools

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Name the measuring tool shown below and state it’s use? The vernier caliper caliper can have a dial readout, or a digital readout. Measuring inside and outside distances very accurately.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS State the use of the profile gauge shown below? Irregular shapes can be copied and traced onto timber or paper for accurate fitting. Fine metal needles can be adjusted to follow shape.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS What care should be taken with retractable measuring tapes, and levels? Spirit levels should be kept clean and not be dropped or bumped. Do not allow the blade to retract quickly or the end will break off.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Name the following saws and give their specific uses? General ripping and cutting large pieces of plywood to size. Sawing Tools Sawing Tools Hand saw.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Name the following saws and give their specific uses? Cutting small pieces of timber and cutting parts of joints, typically tenons. Sawing Tools Sawing Tools Tenon saw.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Name the following saws and give their specific uses? Cutting irregular shapes mostly in thin timbers. Sawing Tools Sawing ToolsCoping saw. Blade guides can be rotated through 360 0 360 0 for cutting in confined spaces.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Name the following saws and give their specific uses? Cutting joints or removing dowels flush with a surface. Sawing Tools Sawing ToolsJapanese saw. Japanese saws cut on the backward stroke. What is the difference between the conventional saw and the Japanese saw?

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Chisels & Gouges Chisels & GougesUsed mainly for preparing joints, chisels are made from ……………….steel with one ……………face and one ………………face. To avoid injury, chisels should be struck with a mallet or held with both hands behind the the …………………………………… EXTRA… tool flatbevelled Cutting edge

Adjustments can be made to the depth of cut and also small lateral movement can be adjusted.Adjustments can be made to the depth of cut and also small lateral movement can be adjusted. State the name and specific functions of the following planes.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Jack Plane General purpose planing. Removing saw marks and reducing timber to size

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Smoothing Plane Very accurate flat planing, or smoothing joints.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Block Plane Planing chamfers and removing arris edges.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Spokeshave Smoothing curved shapes and round material.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Hammers & Mallets Hammers & Mallets Hammers come in several shapes and sizes and are used to drive nails. Traditionally the handles are made of …………….. but more expensive modern of …………….. but more expensive modern handles are made of ………… or ……………………… Name the common hammers shown below and state their general use. timber steel high impact resin

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Claw hammer Driving nails or removing nails.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Warrington Hammer For use with small nails and tacks in small cabinetwork.

WARNING! Never strike hammer faces together!

Why? Small particles of metal may fly off the faces…

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Planes Chisels and gouges should not be struck with hammers unless they have a high impact resin handle. They should be struck with a wooden mallet to prevent ………….. to the …………… damagehandle Mallets are made from Hardwood

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Vices & clamps Vices & clampsTimber should be held firmly when being worked or cut to prevent accidents To prevent damage to the projects being worked. Why are woodwork vices fitted with timber jaws? What determines the length of the handle? The maximum pressure to be exerted on the jaws.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Vices & clamps Vices & clampsClamps are used to hold work on top of the bench, or to hold together parts whilst glue is drying. They may be long and heavy………… Or short and light weight

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Miscellaneous Hand Tools Miscellaneous Hand ToolsAlmost every year manufacturers and inventors come up with new fangled devices to make woodworking easier or safer. Many of these devices are power driven, but there are still some time- honoured favourites that are a part of every wood workshop.

HAND TOOLS HAND TOOLS Miscellaneous Hand Tools Miscellaneous Hand ToolsRasps & Files Files Although files are primarily used in metalworking they perform a useful purpose in smoothing timber that has been shaped by cutting tools. Surform tool Typical Application
