When Matt was 4 years old…
A. Matt tends to cling to you in new situations and often relies on you at home to solve daily problems or to stay focused on activities. He tends to be easily frustrated by difficult tasks and starts whining. On the plus side, he is usually quite compliant and eager to please you now about mealtime, bedtime, etc. B. You tolerate the clinging, because you figure that Matt just needs extra time to get used to new things and extra support to get going on activities. C. You want Matt to be more independent so you usually say, "Now you're a big boy, and you can figure that out on your own. Go ahead, try!" Then you praise whatever effort he makes. D. The clinging bothers you, and you will often turn around and leave Matt in the new situation to figure it out on his own. E. You scold him or ignore the clinging to encourage the development of independence.
