MONDAY
2
BIO I 1,2,5,7 Period 1-27-14 Bell work: Pre-Assessment test prep on page 303. Complete numbers 1-10 only to assess your current understanding of cell division. Objective: I will demonstrate understanding of mitosis through reading and online activity.
3
Monday, 1-27-14 1.Bell work…8 min 2.Understand the stages of Mitosis Preview Mitosis - http://bio.rutgers.edu/~gb101/lab2_mitosis/graphics/aavideo.mov http:// www.johnkyrk.com/mitosis.html …20 min. 3.Mitosis Online Cell Lab http://bio.rutgers.edu/~gb101/lab2_mitosis/index2.html …20 min. 4.Ticket out…5 min. HOMEWORK: Quiz tomorrow over 10.1- 10.2…have notes ready to discuss before quiz. Objective: I will demonstrate understanding of mitosis through reading and online activity.
4
Ticket out 1-27-14 Ticket out: Read page 284. Explain the different between mitosis and cytokinesis! HOMEWORK: Quiz tomorrow over 10.1- 10.2…have notes ready to discuss before quiz.

TUESDAY
6
BIO I 1,2,5,7 Period 1-28-14 Bell work: Feed Planaria Explain why in figure 10-13 on page 285 there is a green arrow for PMAT-C and an orange arrow for Interphase. Objective: I will demonstrate understanding of cell cycle and division through notes, lab, and quiz.
7
Notes 10.2 Forms of DNA 1. Chromatin – NOT condensed DNA 2. Duplicated Chromosome – Condensed 3. Sister Chromatids – Exact copies for cell division Cell Cycle – the cell’s life cycle 1. Interphase – Longest part of cycle…preparation for division and regular metabolism 2. M-phase – mitosis (nucleus division) & cytokinesis (cytoplasm & membrane division)
8
M-phase 1.Mitosis – nuclear division a.Prophase (longest) chromosomes visible, spindles form b.Metaphase (shortest) sister duplicated chromosomes line up at metaphase plate. c.Anaphase – Sister chromatids separate and migrate to poles d.Telophase – Chromosomes unwind, nuclear envelopes redevelop, spindle fibers detach. 2.Cytokinesis – cell splits into two IDENTICAL cells
9
Tuesday, 1-28-14 1.Bell work…8 min 2.Notes…20 min. 3.Quiz…20 min. 4.Ticket out…5 min. HOMEWORK: Read and notes 10.3 Objective: I will demonstrate understanding of cell cycle and division through notes, lab, and quiz.
10
Ticket out 1-28-14 Ticket out: Trade grade IF TIME, if not just turn in before bell rings. HOMEWORK: Read and notes 10.3
11
WEDNESDAY
12
BIO I 1,2,5,7 Period 1-29-14 Bell work: Examine figure 10-16 on page 289. Summarize in your own words. Objective: I will understand cell regulation and LACK of regulation (cancer) through notes, online activity and finally examine planaria for cell reproduction (regeneration)
13
Notes 10.3 The cell cycle is controlled (regulated) by Proteins. 1.Cyclin – starts cell division 2.Internal regulating proteins (Check points for DNA & process corrections) 3.External proteins (Check points for NEED) – Growth Factors
14
CANCER (unregulated cell growth) - When previous proteins don’t work right. 1.Tumor – Mass of unneeded or damaged cells 2.Benign – NOT cancerous 3.Malignant – Cancerous and can metastasize. 4.Metastasize – Move throughout body and invade other tissues.
15
Wednesday, 1-29-14 1.Bell work…8 min 2.Notes/Online…20 min. 3.Planaria Examination/Sketching…20 min. 4.Ticket out…5 min. HOMEWORK: Read 10.4 and notes for tomorrow. Objective: I will understand cell regulation and LACK of regulation (cancer) through notes, online activity and finally examine planaria for cell reproduction.
16
Ticket out 1-29-14 Ticket out: Clean up and zip around to review cancer HOMEWORK: Read 10.4 and notes for tomorrow.
17
THURSDAY
18
BIO I 1,2,5,7 Period 1-30-14 Bell work: Examine figure 10-20 on page 295. Explain what this process has to do with your planaria. Objective: I will demonstrate understanding of stem cell and how they are being used in my planaria. HOMEWORK: Quiz Monday over 10.3- 10.4
19
Thursday, Bell work 1-30-14 1.Bell work…8 min 2.Finish Planaria Video…10 min. 3.View Planaria under microscope…10 min 4.Illustration and Paragraph…10 min. 5.Notes 10.4…10 min. 6.Ticket out…5 min. HOMEWORK: Quiz Monday over 10.3-10.4 Objective: I will demonstrate understanding of stem cell and how they are being used in my planaria.
20
Notes 10.4 Embryo – developmental stage when differentiation occurs. Differentiation – Stem cells change into many types of cells Embryonic stem cell research is CONTROVERSIAL (when does life start)
21
Stem Cells – unspecialized cells 1.Totipotent – can change into ANY cell (body or placental cells) 2.Pluripotent – can change into MOST but NOT ALL cells (only body cells not placental cells) – Embryonic Stem cells do this. 3.Multipotent – to renew and replace cells in an adult…LIMITED – Adult Stem cells do this
22
Ticket out Bell work 1-30-14 Ticket out: In your own words describe which would be better for a procedure like the one seen on page 296…multipotent, or pluripotent stem cells and why. HOMEWORK: Quiz Monday over 10.3-10.4
