SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Purpose FEC Partner goals Purchasing Operations Disposal Current Efforts
4
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention FEC Partner Goals: 2006 Joined February 2006 First year goals: –Vendors supply equipment with “Sleep” feature enabled –“Sleep” features enabled on 100% of existing monitors (ongoing) –Default to 2-side printing at copiers and network printers (ongoing) –Recycle 100% of non-reusable computers
5
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Estimated impact – purchase, operations and disposal FY06 purchases: $34.4M ($67M in FY05) Estimated in service: –20,000 desktop systems (6300 desktops purchased in FY06) –5000 laptops –4000 additional monitors –30 months lifetime Estimated consumption: –~13M kWh/yr, ~$518,000
6
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Purchasing CRTs out, LCDs in – Energy Star compliant FY06: Spent over $7.5 million to purchase: –2,822 desktop systems, 989 laptops, and additional 602 monitors, all of which are registered as EPEAT-Silver Preference for EPEAT Bronze or higher in JIT computer contract language
7
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention “Green” Printer matrix Complementary to EPEAT, customized to SNL/NM Trial basis at this point Entry per product, scored by supplier “Binary” scoring system for green features: –Energy Star –Blue Angel –Duplexing –Network capable Higher score means green choice Qualifying scores and an icon to be added to vendor catalog entries
8
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Energy Star enabled Network-based enterprise delivery of Common Operating Environment (COE) software programs –Immense savings on (no delivery of) boxed manuals and software –At end of FY06, deployed new program to activate “sleep” features on network-connected monitors Within first week, 9300 computer stations impacted Estimated 12,000 monitors were finally changed To raise awareness, several internal e- newsletters sent to give details on enabling and estimated savings.
9
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Instructions to save energy and paper Fact sheet distributed to department secretaries –Energy Star –Duplexing –Recycling of consumables
10
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Reuse & Recycling 104,700 pounds reused or recycled during the FEC Electronics Reuse and Recycling Campaign (ERRC). Two separate shipments to an approved e-waste recycling vendor –76 pallets of CPU’s Receive certificate of destruction
11
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Partnering (This week) New tent will be installed at our Reapplication Services yard. Developed an MOA and an associated procedures document
12
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention New Tent Staging area for electronics prior to recycle House other P2 initiatives: –Toner Exchange –Office Supply reuse area –LCDs for CRTs, for energy savings –Building materials recycling
13
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention FEC Partner Goals: 2007 1.Evaluate total cost of ownership for new purchases 2.Establish & promote policy to power off PCs when employees go home 3.Reuse or refurbish 25% of equipment Drawn from FEC annual award criteria Seeking a 2007 Bronze or Silver award
14
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Path Forward Develop an FEC fact sheet for internal awareness & training Pursue 16 objectives listed in FEC annual award criteria that were evaluated to be “achievable” –An additional 10 objectives “require further investigation” for feasibility Contract for e-waste recycling New Energy Star designated equipment
15
SNL/NM Pollution Prevention Copiers are Printers too 10 Copiers enabled as network printers – Pre-existing capabilities not being used – Pursuing fax and scan-to-email options – Objective: reduction of equipment fleet 450 copiers site-wide is long-term objective
16
