What is TransSTEM Academy?  TransSTEM is the Transportation and STEM Academy of Cardozo Education Campus. It was established in 1991 and formerly known as TransTech Academy.  The Academy combines a high quality education with specialized career pathways, projects, field experiences, mentorships and internships that emphasize S.T.E.M.

TransSTEM Academy’s Goals  Support high academic attainment (exceeding D.C. Public Schools system requirements)  Create successful student transition to post- secondary education and training  Promote and support STEM careers in the field of transportation  Prepare students for success in STEM careers

Components of TransSTEM Career Pathways Travel Internships Mentorships Field Trips Special Projects

Career Pathways 1 Aviation and Aeronautics 2 Electro-Mechanical Technology 3 Pre-Engineering 4 Computer Science

and Aeronautics 1 Aviation and Aeronautics  Students engage in Summer Aviation Institutes, refurbish aircrafts in the Build a Plane Project; and learn the basics of flight and receive hands-on experiences through the use of flight simulators and actually flight time.  Students are able to choose an Aerospace Engineering concentration in this pathway.

and Aeronautics 4 Computer Science  Expansion of the current transportation curriculum to include a career pathway in Computer Science.  Computer Science pathway began in the 2013-2014 school year.  Introduces students to the field of computer science through focusing on the conceptual ideas of computing.

Mentorships  Participate in mentorships and interact with professionals from both the public and private sectors sponsored by General Electric Women’s Network (GEWN) and the Federally Employed Women (FEW), USDOT.  Provide seminars and workshops on personal mission statements, finance, interviewing strategies and dressing for success.

Internships  Engage in on the job training in the Electro-Mechanical Technology Training program sponsored by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).  Participate in paid summer internships exploring such areas as Solar Energy, Build a Plane Projects and Robotics Training.

Travel and Field Trips  Travel outside of the DC area to discover colleges, universities, with emphasis on historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Learn about campus life, and tour exciting cities and places.  Visits to transportation-related agencies and organizations.

Travel and Field Trips  Attend national conferences, e.g., National Society of Blacks in Engineering (NSBE), Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) Conference, Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting, and Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) Conference.

Special Projects  FIRST Robotics Competition  Electric/Solar Car – Sustainable Transportation  Un-Manned Vehicles

Special Projects  Participate in paid summer jobs program such as Build a Plane Project, Solar Energy, and Robotics Training during the summer.

Special Programs & Events  TransSTEM Plus Academy for Middle School (TSAPlus)  Industry Day  Career and Leadership Day  Exploration Day for Middle School Students
