The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome The objective of Christ coming 8:4 Christ coming in the flesh to be an offering for sin was to accomplish something “…that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us… What “requirement?” RIGHTEOUSNESS Question #4 Body Of Death? 7:24 – 8:30 Who Will Free Me From This
5
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome The objective of Christ coming 8:4 A “righteousness” previously argued 4:1-24 [Abraham & faith] Based on our obedience to God’s plan to redeem us 5:1, 16, 18 6:3-7, 12-19 (justification) Question #4 Body Of Death? 7:24 – 8:30 Who Will Free Me From This
6
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome Achieving this “requirement” 8:5-8 We cannot set our minds on the things of the flesh Eph 2:3 Gal 5:16-21 We must set our minds on the things of the Spirit Gal 5:16-17, 22-25 Col 3:2 Question #4 Body Of Death? 7:24 – 8:30 Who Will Free Me From This
7
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome Achieving this “requirement” 8:5-8 Fleshly minds vs. Spiritual minds Fleshly minds are “hostile toward God”… cannot please Him A familiar N.T. theme 1 Cor 2:10-15 Col 1:19-23 Gal 5:16-25 Question #4 Body Of Death? 7:24 – 8:30 Who Will Free Me From This

The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome Who is the “spiritual person?” 8:9-11 The one in whom the Holy Spirit and Christ dwells vv. 9-10 If so, “…life is given to our mortal bodies” previously dead because of sin v. 11 As Christ was raised, so are we 6:4b-5 Question #4 Body Of Death? 7:24 – 8:30 Who Will Free Me From This

The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome What is meant by “dwell?” Some believe this refers to a personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit In addition, others believe it is miraculous Paul seems to be discussing a relationship or one’s standing based on how he is influenced The issue is not “geographical positioning” (the Holy Spirit physically being in a believer) The Scripture uses the term “dwell” in numerous ways to indicate a “relationship” or “influence”
10
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome What is meant by “dwell?” God the Father “dwells in” the believer Jn 14:23 2 Cor 6:16 God the Son “dwells in” the believer Jn 14:23 Eph 3:17 God the Spirit “dwells in” the believer Acts 5:32 Rom 5:5 1 Cor 6:19 2 Cor 1:22 The saint “dwells in” God 1 Jn 4:16 Sin can “dwell in” a person Rom 7:17, 20
11
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome What is meant by “dwell?” What is not addressed in these passages is how God “dwells in” a believer When a passage discusses such a concept, the context (immediate & surrounding) must be the determining factor There is no dispute that the Holy Spirit is to be “in” (dwell in) the Christian The dispute is over how this occurs?
12
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome What is meant by “dwell?” What would be accomplished by a personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the Christian? When the word of God richly dwells within us (Col 3:16a), is that not the medium by which the Spirit “dwells?” The word is also the medium by which Christ “…dwells in our hearts by faith” Jn 15:1-7 Eph 3:17 Rom 10:17
13
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome What is meant by “dwell?” Those who contend for a personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit normally cite Acts 2:38 The phrase “gift of the Holy Spirit” does not clearly indicate whether the Spirit is the “gift” or whether He is the “giver” of the “gift” The context seems to indicate salvation is the topic…a “gift” given by the Spirit through the word He inspires Acts 2:14-40 Jas 1:21b
14
The Just Shall Live By Faith Studying Paul’s Letter To Rome What is meant by “dwell?” Re: Acts 2:38… Those who would contend “gift of the Holy Spirit” refers to the Spirit Himself will need to harmonize that interpretation with Acts 8:14-16 If every believer personally receives the Holy Spirit upon his/her salvation, how will these texts be reconciled?
