It is of the utmost importance that all should thoroughly investigate these subjects.”

The Sanctuary Lesson 4, October 26 The Sanctuary Lesson 4, October 26 Lessons From the Sanctuary
7
Lessons From the Sanctuary Key Text Exodus 25:8 NASB “ ‘LET THEM construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them’.”
8
Lessons From the Sanctuary Initial Words {207} The sanctuary is one of God’s major devices to teach us the meaning of the gospel.
9
Lessons From the Sanctuary Quick Look 1. His Presence Means HOLINESS (Exodus 40:10, 11) 2. His Presence Means ACTIVITIES (1 Kings 8:27-29) 3. His Presence Means SALVATION (Psalm 23:6)
10
Lessons From the Sanctuary 1. His Presence Means Holiness Exodus 40:9, 10 NKJV “ ‘AND YOU shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it…and it shall be holy. You shall anoint the altar of the burnt offering and all its utensils, and sanctify the altar. The altar shall be most holy.’ ”
11
1. His Presence Means Holiness Place of His Presence {208} IN THE garden of Eden, sin had broken the face-to-face relationship between God and humanity. The Creator still desired to draw us to Himself and to enjoy a deep covenant relationship with fallen humanity, and He began this process right there in Eden.
12
1. His Presence Means Holiness Place of His Presence {208} The sanctuary testifies of God’s unceasing desire to dwell among His people. His ultimate goal is relationship, and the sanctuary services were His chosen means to illustrate that relationship.
13
1. His Presence Means Holiness Place of His Presence {208} Another purpose of the sanctuary was to provide a location for a centralized, divinely ordained system of worship. He provided a system of sacrifices and offerings through which unholy people could live and remain in the presence of a Holy God.
14
1. His Presence Means Holiness “Be Ye Holy” {209} Exodus 40:9, 10 shows us that the sanctuary was to be regarded as “holy.” God’s holiness transforms us and sets us apart. His holiness is the ultimate motivation for the ethical conduct of His people in all spheres of life.
15
1. His Presence Means Holiness “Be Ye Holy” {209} God wants us to grow in holiness as we become closer to Him. This change can come about only through a self-surrender of our sinful natures and through a willingness to do what is right, regardless of the consequences.
16
Lessons From the Sanctuary 2. His Presence Means Activities 1 Kings 8:27-29 NKJV “ ‘BUT WILL God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! Yet regard the prayer of Your servant… that you may hear the prayer…before you today’.”
17
2. His Presence Means Activities Instruments of the Sanctuary {210} 1. ARK OF the testimony: supreme symbol of God’s presence/holiness. 2. Lampstand: always provided light. 3. Altar of incense: produced smoke that conceal the presence of God. 4. Table for the bread of the presence: 12 loaves of bread representing the 12 tribes of Israel. 5. Dishes, pans, jars, and bowls.
18
2. His Presence Means Activities Center of Divine and Communal Activity The Seven functions (1 Kings 8): 1. Seeking forgiveness (vs 30) 2. Oath swearing (vss 31, 32) 3. Supplication in defeat (vss 33, 34) 4. Petition during drought (vss 35, 36) 5. Or other disasters (vss 37-40) 6. Where foreigners pray (vss 41-43) 7. Petition for victory (vss 44, 45)
19
2. His Presence Means Activities Center of Divine and Communal Activity The sanctuary was the ideological center of basically all activity in Israel. Religion was not just part of the believer’s life, even if it was a major part; it was life.
20
Psalm 23:6 NKJV “SURELY GOODNESS and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the L ORD forever.” Lessons From the Sanctuary 3. His Presence Means Salvation
21
“Until I Went Into the Sanctuary” {212} THE ACTIVITIES of God in the sanctuary illustrate some crucial points: He keeps the worshiper safe and hides him in His sanctuary, even in tough times (Psalm 27:5). The sanctuary service with its symbolic significance shows the goodness and justice of God.
22
3. His Presence Means Salvation “Until I Went Into the Sanctuary” {212} In Psalm 73, Asaph addressed the problem of suffering. He could not understand the apparent success of the wicked (vss 4-12) while the faithful were afflicted. He himself almost slipped (vss 1-3), but going into the sanctuary made the difference for him (vss 13-17).
23
3. His Presence Means Salvation “Until I Went Into the Sanctuary” {212} There, Asaph could see the power and glory of God and recognize that the present conditions will one day change and justice will be done. For those who seek God, the sanctuary becomes a place of confidence and a stronghold of life, one where God will set them “high upon a rock” (Psalm 27:5, NKJV).
24
Lessons From the Sanctuary Final Words {213} “ FOR THE building of the sanctuary…a large amount of the most precious and costly material was required; yet the Lord accepted only freewill offerings. … Devotion to God and a spirit of sacrifice were the first requisites in preparing a dwelling place for the Most High.” Patriarchs and Prophets 414
