3 Guiding Questions ●How do we preserve the sense of community at Dublin? ●How do we help all students succeed at high levels? ●How do we help our students manage stress? ●How do we address our underperforming students?

4 Freshman Mentor Program ●Designed to support 9th graders during their Freshman year. ●All freshmen meet Monday-Thursday for the first 20 minutes of lunch. ●Grouped by counselor: 25 Freshmen, 1 Teacher/Advisor, 4 Upperclassman Mentors ●Platform to ensure that all Freshmen have a strong start at Dublin High.

5 FMP: Lessons Learned ●All Mentors need training and constant support ●Constant development of program ●Ongoing conversations with Freshmen ●Shift to Social and Emotional Wellness with a clear set of standards ●We had 67 students apply to be first time mentors and 38 current FMPs wanting to come back!

6 Learning Center: The Hub ●Tutoring offered in the Hub Monday-Friday at lunch and after school until 5:00 pm ●Tutors: Teacher, College and Peer ●Currently Math, ELA, Social Studies, World Languages, Science ●Mandatory and Drop-In help available

8 Learning Center: Challenges ●Study environment challenged by large numbers ●Drop-in students may be overlooked ●Not enough tutors or time at lunch and after school to target all students needing help

9 Learning Center: College Norms “The rigor of classes and the expectations here at Cal are very difficult and high. However, with the help of tutors, I was able to learn the level of analysis needed to succeed at Cal." ~4th year UC Berkeley student ●UC Berkeley’s Student Learning Center services about 40% of its undergrads annually We want to: ●Improve process for placement and monitoring ●Support increased access to advanced classes ●Push students to develop study skills for success in College and Career UCB’s Student Learning Center services approximately 40% of its undergrads.

10 2015-2016: 7 Period Day ●Adds time for support throughout the day: Expanded Tutoring ●Creates a Freshman Year designed for success ●Allows students time during their day to aquire time management skills

11 The Freshman Day ●All 9th graders will take 7 classes ●One semester Freshman Seminar ●One semester Health ●Freshman Mentor Program (FMP)

12 Two Systems of Support for Freshmen Freshman Seminar is a semester long course to prepare students for life after high school. This course is led by teachers and provides students with a view of their future and a plan on how to get there. FMP is a year long Transitional Support Period to develop Social and Emotional Awareness. It is led by mentors and provides freshmen with guidance on how to navigate high school. These two programs will give students the social and emotional support they need as well as a focus and the tools required for their studies based on their future goals.

13 7-period day: Grades 10 & 11 ●Students continue to take 6 classes. ●Students in Good Academic standing will earn the privilege of a GAEL period. ●GAEL= Great Academically Engaged Learning. ●This will be one of their scheduled classes. ●For 10th and 11th graders, the GAEL period would be scheduled 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6th period. ●Students out of Good Standing will be assigned to the Hub until their grades improve.

14 GAEL Period for Seniors ●Seniors in Good Academic Standing may schedule their GAEL period 1st or 7th, allowing a late start or early dismissal.

15 GAEL Period Structure Scan System Check in the: Hub, Student Union, Career Center, Collaboration Space ●Access tutoring in Hub ●Make Up Tests ●Work on Homework ●Meet with Counselor ●Snack / Take a breath (i.e.,read, journal)

16 Need for Time Management Support ●58%=Strongly Agree 30%=Agree: Stress is an issue (WASC Student Survey) ●College stress can be huge. The Spring 2013 edition of the National College Health Assessment, where the average age of those surveyed was 21 years, reported that almost half (46.3%) of all undergraduate students surveyed felt trauma or overwhelmed in regard to their academic responsibilities.National College Health Assessment ●An American Journal of Health Studies study reveals that teaching time management techniques can be more effective at reducing stress levels in college students for both males and females than engaging in leisure activities.American Journal of Health Studies

17 Athletics ●Ongoing meetings with coaching staff ●When possible, athletes would be scheduled in GAEL period 6th or 7th to minimize impact of away games ●Coaches are encouraging students to utilize supports available at school

20 Collaboration We propose a weekly late start for students every Wednesday. This time would be used for Collaboration and Staff Meetings. The Hub will be open during this time for student use.
