1 Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI Standard: 1.4 Students will identify common roots and affixes derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words (e.g., international).

2 Learning Objective I will know common roots derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words.

3 Activating Prior Knowledge Have you heard the word civilize? The root civi means “relating to citizens.” Can you see the root ord in order? The root ord means “regular.” Can you see the root ord in the Spanish word “orden” or in the English word order?

4 Concept Development Root : The fundamental element of a word or form, exclusive of all affixes and inflectional phonetic changes. Root: The root is the part of the word that contains the basic meaning.

5 Concept Development civi : From the Latin word civis meaning “citizen” or “a member of a city.” ord: From the Latin word ordo meaning “regularity” or “order.” civi: Latin root meaning “citizen.” ord: Latin root meaning “regular.”

6 Tell your partner what civi means. Civi is a Latin root meaning “citizen.”

7 Tell your partner what ord means. Ord is a Latin root meaning “regular.”

18 Extension One of the key words in this lesson is civility. It ends with the suffix –ity. This suffix shows that a word is a noun. The meaning of a noun ending in –ity is usually connected to the meaning of its adjective partner. Civility is related to “being civil,” just as equality is related to “being equal.” Civil and equal are adjectives. Civility and equality are nouns. All of the nouns in the first column end in the suffix –ity.
