2 What is a sentence? A sentence is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. A sentence must make sense!!

3 What is a simple sentence?
Can stand alone (independent) Can contain compound parts (such as two subject, two verbs, or both) The squirrel found and buried the food.

4 What is a compound sentence?
two or more simple sentences joined together may be joined by a semicolon or a comma and a coordinating conjunction

5 Semicolon Compound sentences can be joined together by a semicolon.
The squirrel climbed the bird feeder; the birds flew away.

6 Coordinating Conjunctions
Compound sentences can be joined by a comma and a conjunction. but, or, yet, for, and, nor, so The squirrel climbed the bird feeder, and the birds flew away.

7 Examples Justin Lebo of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, loved bikes.
He and his dad shared an interest in bicycle racing. They had their garage set up like a bike shop; they worked there on bikes all the time.

9 More Practice Helium weighs more than hydrogen, but it is less dangerous than the lighter gas. A severe storm struck the area and downed its power lines. The students visited a nursing home; most of them enjoyed the experience.

10 More Practice The rain stopped abruptly, and cold air swept in from the north. The stilt-walker fell during his performance, but his only injury was to his pride. The electrician needed tools and insulated wire to restore service.

11 More Practice The benefit dinner was a success. The school band still needed more money for new uniforms. The skater did a back flip. The crowd applauded. Jane’s newest house robot moves smoothly. She’s very proud of it.
