Kolstad Kids at WJGC Issoudun, France August 5-18, 2001 Text and photos by John H. Campbell, SSA Youth Committee.

Opening Ceremonies L-R Jason Howard (21) Dan Sorenson (21) Mike Robison (21) Garret Willat (19), Crew All winners of SSA’s Kolstad youth grant. All 1,000 hr CML pilots.

Pilots at practice L-R Mike Robison (PA) Danny Sorenson (TX) Jason Howard (NY) They all flew the 2001 STD Nationals. Danny & Mike then flew the WC Nats, which Danny won! Danny & Jason practiced team flying in Uvalde.

Field Fire Thermals After the rainy practice week, the local farmers were all ready to burn their stubble. This fire is sprouting a cumulus. Not so visible are the 6 gliders in the column going up 8 kt+. On days where normal thermals were 2 kt, lucking into a fire made a huge boost. There were also flight-saver thermals over nuclear power plants along the Loire river. Turnpoints could be medieval castles or cathedrals..

Gliders on the grid Mike’s LS-4, newly refinished in Poland, with mirror-like wings. Thanks, AeC Coulommiers. Mike was in Club Class with 32 other ships, ranging from VS0-10 to LS-4. Danny and Jason both had Discus Bs, among 30 in Standard Class. Thanks, Piet Oehl, Axel Reich.

Sponsors The Junior Team alone (not with other SSA WGC Teams), was sponsored by: Cambridge Mountain High Wings & Wheels Cumulus Courseware...who donated raffle prizes. Decals were on all our ships. Thanks to Bermuda High, Knauff & Grove, NSM, and many other donors & supporters.

Rope Tricks Every day, the 6 towplanes would drop everyone’s ropes (sometimes it seemed very close!). Then we would have to fetch them. One rope for every ship.

Finishers Finishes were typically “rolling”, as teams. These are the winning UK LS-8s

Winners L-R: Standard, Club. USA was not in the winners’ circle. Team flying was key to the Brits 1-2 in Std. Danny’s best day was 5th (behind UK/FR), Mike’s 10th.
