2 Source vs. Data Cards Source Cards Use your articles Book Internet Articles Periodicals (magazines or newspapers) Use packet to find how to do these cards Data Cards Read and use information to create Direct Quotes Paraphrases

3 Source Cards Source Letter Skip a line. Write information like samples in packet. Skip lines and use reverse indentation by tabbing each line.

7 Data Card Information 3 types: Direct Quote Paraphrase Use packet for format All data on card must be found on matching source

8 Data Cards—Four Corners Main Idea/Title of card Source letter/Card# Skip a line and write information (data) from a source. Do not skip lines. Do not reverse indent. For “direct quote”, add extra line like below. * I will use this information to show/prove that… Include the Speaker and title of who stated quote (Citation) Type of Card

9 Sample Data Card Television Effects A1 According to….Speaker: Dr. Charles Davis Position: Research Professor at Stanford University “Before the television was invented, 1 out of 15 children was considered overweight. In 2005, 50 years after the television became affordable, the number has jumped to 1 out of 5.” Real quote from article. Finish this thought. Speaker and title. * I will use this information to show that childhood obesity is linked to television watching. (Jones 18). Direct Quote

10 Data Card - Quote “Because Cal Poly Pomona’s financial team had recognized a possible economic downturn three years ago, the university began preparing for reduced spending. 11 Data Card - Paraphrase The university is in a stable position right now because of pre-planning. It realized that tough economic times were possible and began saving while other institutions were spending. There actions were critical in helping with the future planning of the school and it’s funding. The steps that were taken helped prepared them for the difficult economic challenges the lay ahead. 18 Guidelines Choose a passage that is large or full of a lot of info (a big paragraph) Don’t choose a passage that is already short and easy to understand

19 Guidelines Read the passage a few times Ask yourself “What is the essence of this passage?” or “What is this passage saying?”

20 Guidelines Change Key vocabulary Replace $25 words Get rid of fluff Words or phrases that can be omitted w/o affecting the meaning of the passage Keep names, dates, places or other info. that is important to the overall meaning of the passage

21 Guidelines Change the order of information Do not use the same combination of words as in the original text

22 Guidelines Make the passage shorter and easier to understand (simplify) Do all of this w/o losing the original meaning of the passage
