23.3 Last Days of the New Deal

Recession of 1937 ► August 1937 industrial production fell, so did employment. ► FDR had cut back on govt. spending, people had less money. ► FDR also raised taxes, prohibited economic investment from the wealthy.

Unions Triumph ► Unions were originally designed to help “skilled” labor. ► United Mine workers Pres. John L. Lewis created the Committee for Industrial Organization to support “unskilled” workers. ► Steel mills, auto plants, etc.

► Main tool of unions was the strike. ► Sit-down strikes became most famous. ► Picket lines prevented scabs from crossing over into the factory. ► First sit-down strike took place at rubber plants in Akron, Ohio. ► Henry Ford continued to resist unionism in his plants.

► Unions generally supported non- violent resistance. ► Supreme Court eventually outlawed the sit-down strike. ► Too potent of a weapon and obstacle of negotiation.

New Deal Effects on Culture ► Works associated with the Depression became popular, John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath. ► Daytime dramas on the radio appeared-Soap Operas. ► Aimed at women and often sponsored by soap companies.

► Movies that showed the triumph over evil were also popular, along with movies that offered an escape from reality-Wizard of Oz. ► FDR did not want people to have to give up the arts during this tough time. ► He earmarked money for unemployed artists, historians, musicians, etc..

Lasting New Deal Achievements ► Voters began to expect a President to solve problems. ► People accepted more govt. intervention in their lives. ► Grew accustomed to large govt. ► Laborers demanded more changes in the workplace.

► Many New Deal projects still dot the landscape: dams, bridges, roads, etc. ► FDIC still exists to this day. ► Social Security System. ► True economic recovery does not come about to the 1940’s. ► WWII
