LO: To decide whether Dunkirk was a success or failure.
2
Hitler’s invading tactic was called BLITZKRIEG. It is German for “lightning war”. Why do you think it had that name? How do you think these three pictures are linked?
3
Blitzkrieg The aim was to hit a place hard then move on straight away, and it aimed to create chaos among people who lived in the towns Stuka dive bombers “softened” a town up Panzer tanks rolled in and cleaned up the rest People caused havoc as they fled to the next town along…but the Germans were on their way!
4
Using Blitzkrieg, or “Lightning War”, Germany defeated France in just 6 weeks! This meant all French and British troops were pushed back to the beaches at Dunkirk What now???
6
Look at the sources p.158-9 Make the table below: TriumphDisaster
7
Britain sent 860 boats to rescue both British and French men. This included big Navy ships and also “little boats” – trawlers, fishing boats, lifeboats, sailed by civilians. In nine days 338,226 men had been rescued. It was the biggest evacuation ever. What do you think made Dunkirk a triumph (a success)? What do you think the leaders at home said about Dunkirk? Would they say it was a disaster or triumph? Why?
9
Using your table you are going to create a biased newspaper front page story about Dunkirk, with a picture to illustrate it. You can tell the story either from a British point of view or a German point of view E.g. DISASTER IN DUNKIRK! Or BRITISH SPIRIT WINS AGAIN!

What do we think: triumph or disaster?
