ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Stein Sandven, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center CCI sea ice project Phase 1 results and plans for Phase 2 Science leader: Stein Sandven, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Sea Ice Concentration algorithm comparison: SIC=15%, AMSR, no WF Standard deviation in %

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 SIC processing at Met.Norway Based on OSISAF facilities

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Sea ice concentration datasets v01.11 NetCDF CF files, EASE2-grid (25x25 km) Northern and Southern Hemisphere Interpolation in time and/or space to fill in missing data SSM/I: 1992-2009 AMSR-E: 2003-2011 25x25 km cells.

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Regional differences between algorithms Standard deviations from the mean: Sea ice concentration 1979 – 2012 1992 – 2012 March September %

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Trend in Arctic ice area Summer Arctic Sea Ice area before and after SICCI. Consistent tie-points reduces algorithm spread substantially

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Too small extent in NH winter (due to too warm Labrador Sea). Too large extent in NH summer, and too slow decline compared with observations. Too thick and extensive summer ice extent in SH (too much multi year ice). Mars September Mars Evaluation of climate models (NorESM) with SIC and SIT data Sea ice extent from NorESM1-M CMIP5 runs and observations Mar Sep Mar

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Plans for SIC work in Phase 2 Extend ECV data sets by including: SMMR (1978-1987); SSMIS from CMSAF (2008-2013) and SSMIS operational (2014-2016) Science driven requirements, based on input from CMUG and other user groups Performance driven requirements, defined by the producers of the ECV data sets in order to improve “operationalization” Topics for Phase 2: revising L2 uncertainties, ATM correction scheme, coastal correction, dynamical landmask, etc.

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Ice thickness from altimeters: penetration depth

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 10 Sea Ice Thickness Processor implemented at FMI Same as previous Laxon/UCL processor. Fixed ice density of 900 kg/m 3 and snow density and thickness from Warren climatology. Room for improvement in SICCI phase 2!

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Monthly Sea Ice Thickness from Envisat RA-2, Oct 2007 – Mar 2008 Sea ice thickness retrievals from ENVISAT

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 CryoSat-2 freeboard retrievals in Antarctica July 2013 First freeboard estimate, uncorrected. Track across the Weddell Sea.

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Add Cryosat-2 data to the existing processor chain, bringing in the AWI processor Test different retrackers Revisit algorithm selection and improve FB - > SIT conversion Improve access to auxiliary ice type and snow information Test sea ice thickness (SIT) retrieval in the Antarctic Build an SIT product in agreement with users Plan for Phase 2 (SIT)

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Extending sea ice ECV timeseries in phase 2 Merging ERS-1/2 with ENVISAT Include feasibility study of sea ice drift as a new sea ice ECV

ESA Climate Change Initiative - Sea Ice project CMUG Fourth Integration Meeting Met Office Exeter, 2 – 4 June 2014 Data Access o Available from Integrated Climate Data Center (ICDC): http://icdc.zmaw.de/esa-cci_sea-ice-ecv0.html?&L=1 http://icdc.zmaw.de/esa-cci_sea-ice-ecv0.html?&L=1 o SIC: sea ice concentration, retrieval uncertainties, status flag, latitude, longitude; file size: 1.3 Mbyte/day & hemisphere. 25 km x 25 km EASE2 grid, daily, year round, both hemispheres. SSMI:1992-2009, AMSRE:2002-2011. Available also at Arctic Data Centre at Met.Norway. o SIT: freeboard from RADAR, sea ice thickness, number of measurements, latitude, longitude; file size: < 1 Mbyte/month, 100 km x 100 km EASE2 grid, monthly, Oct- Mar, Arctic Ocean, Envisat 2003-2012
