Tool making techniques

Homo habilis  Percussion flaking  Oldowan Tools

Homo erectus  Acheulean Tools –Hand ax, cleaver, picks, knives –Anvil & bipolar percussion

Archaic Homo sapiens  Levalloisian technique –Many flakes from the core  Hafting

Archaic Homo sapiens  Mousterian tradition –Lighter & smaller –Variety

Homo sapiens  Pressure flaking

If early hominids are our past… What does the future hold?

Homo erectus evolved in Africa into Homo Sapiens. Then, these earliest Homo sapiens spread “out of Africa” to all parts of the world. Other species found DID NOT play a role in the evolution of humans.

Homo erectus left Africa and evolved separately into Homo sapiens. All species remained similar enough to mate but they did develop differences. (Skin color/eye shape.) One group in Europe evolved but did not survive (Neanderthal.)

The Future of Evolution

Major trends in hominid evolution  Tools are becoming lighter and smaller

Major trends in hominid evolution  Tools are more specialized

Major trends in human evolution  Decrease in size of face and teeth  Larger brains  Reduction of body size and robustness –? Obesity rates are rising!

Current Evolution  One species of humans  Stable brain size  Increased intelligence  Developed institutions

Current Examples (?)  Wisdom teeth  Stature (People are getting taller)  Feet are getting larger  Eyesight less important –Glasses/contacts/surgery  ???????

What will humans look like in the future?  I think…. –Larger brain size –More similar to each other –Darker skin due to ultraviolet rays –Smaller jaws (Meals in a pill) –Smaller build (less need for strength) –Air-cars

Our future  What do you think we will look like in 1 million years? What do you think the world will look like?  Draw a picture of humans, their vehicles, their environment, their food, their clothes, etc.  DUE: Tomorrow 15 POINTS
