10. Concept Check  1. What main role does the thymus carry out?  Production of T-Cells (white blood cells that fight viruses and infection, including autoimmune diseases.  2. Why does the thymus gland shrink as we get older?  It is only active until puberty, after which it is replaced by fat. It is largest during adolescent years.  3. What is homeostasis? How does the Hypothalamus regulate this?  Homeostasis is the body maintaining balance in acidity and alkalinity, and regulating body temperature. The hypothalamus controls when other endocrine glands produce their respective hormones, thereby controlling homeostasis.
