5 The new Chapter since SoER No. 9 Tourism; but why? Tourism is a very important economic sector in Austria (18.000 Mio. EUR; 7,5% of the GDP; 130 Mio. overnight-stay) Tourism in Austria is directly connected to the environment (skiing, hiking, mountain-biking, lake-side tourism, etc.) Sensitive Areas are effected (high alpine areas, complex eco-systems of alpine lakes, etc.) Direct environmental effects (traffic, energy consumption, waste, artificial snow, etc.) in-direct environmental effects (touristic infrastructure, like cable cars, Skiing slopes, etc.) 5

6 Data collection Compilation of existing data (energy, traffic, noise, waste, etc.) Strategies how to allocate effects from tourism (statistical methods, calculations, surveys, etc.) Results:- Impact of tourism is visible - ‘Need for action’ is obvious - Strategies can be developed - Impact of adaptations can be calculated 6

7 Benefits New concepts (e.g. car-free villages) New ideas (environmentally-sensitive tourism, revival of unique local cuisine, etc.) New communications messages (tourists prefer a clean and healthy environment, better image, etc.) Last but not least: Higher turnover per tourist 7
