Graph Using Slope- Intercept Form Section 4.5 Math 2 Mr. Keltner

Slope-Intercept Form A linear equation is written in slope- intercept form when it is in the form y = mx + b Where m is the slope of the graph and b is the y-intercept of the equation’s graph. NOTE: the y-intercept will be at the point (0, b). Click here to see how the slope and y- intercept of the graph can change its appearance.here

Example 1 Identify the slope and y-intercept of each equation below. y = 5x - 3 3x - 3y = 12 x + 4y = 6

When slope and y-intercept are known Graph a line that has a slope of 1 / 4 and a y-intercept of 2. Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

When slope and a point are known Graph a line that has a slope of 3 and goes through the point (0, -4). Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

When two points are known Graph a line that goes through the points (0, -3) and (4, 1). Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

When BOTH intercepts are known Graph a line that has an x-intercept of 3 and a y-intercept of -3. Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

When two points are known (NOT intercepts) Graph a line through (-2, -1) and (3, 5). Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

When two points have the same x-value Graph a line through (-2, -4) and (-2, 3). Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

When two points have the same y-value Graph a line through (3, 5) and (-1, 5). Find the equation of the line. y x 5 5 -5

Parallel Lines Two lines are considered parallel if they are equidistant from one another for all points on a graph.  “They never touch or cross each other.” Looking at the graph at the right, both lines have a slope of 3, but the lines have different y-intercepts. So, from this we can see that parallel lines have equal slopes. y x 5 5 -5

Example Determine which lines are parallel. y x 5 5 -5
