Gradient and Intercept
2
Intercept When the number in front of the x is the SAME all the lines are PARALLEL. The lines cross the y-axis (vertical axis) at the number that comes after the x. The number after the x is called the INTERCEPT of the straight line. It tells you where the line crosses the y-axis. If you want to work out the INTERCEPT of a straight line look where it crosses the y-axis, this is the INTERCEPT, c.
3
Gradient The greater the number is in front of the x the steeper the line is. The number in front of the x is called the GRADIENT of the straight line. It tells you how steep the line is. If you want to work out the GRADIENT of a straight line pick any 2 points on the line. Divide the vertical distance between the 2 points by the horizontal distance between them, this is the GRADIENT, m.
4
The Equation of any Straight Line Any straight line can be written as: y =mx + c gradientintercept
