Company established in 1974 Part of Halma PLC since 2000 All products designed and manufactured in Hitchin in the UK Employs 40 people Annual turnover over £7.5m 75% of sales are to export markets Export to over 80 countries globally FIRE FIGHTING ENTERPRISES Ltd. Market leader with over 650,000 Optical Beams sold worldwide FFE manufacture a complete RANGE of Optical Beam Detectors Hitchin

Infra-red light Optical Beam axis and centre WHAT IS AN OPTICAL BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR? An Optical Beam Smoke Detector is a device which monitors the amount of Infrared light transmitted from a light source to a photosensitive Receiver across an open area to be protected. If obscuration of the Optical Beam path exceeds a set value due to smoke, the Optical Beam sends a signal to the Fire Alarm Control Panel
5
If smoke obscures the light path from Transmitter (Tx) to Receiver (Rx) above a preset level, an alarm condition is signalled to the Fire Alarm Control Panel PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

CONCLUSION FIRERAY optical beam smoke detectors are the ideal type of detector to choose for many large installations. They are an efficient and economical way of protecting lives, equipment and properties where: Areas are wide Ceilings are high Cost of installation and servicing need to be low Architecture cosmetics / aesthetics are important Ceilings are ornate

EXTRACT FROM STANDARDS BS5839: “Transmitters, Receivers and any Reflectors should be mounted on solid construction that will not be subject to movement, likely to affect the alignment of the optical beam, as a result of changes in temperature or imposed load” UL: “Projected beam-type detectors and mirrors shall be mounted on stable surfaces to prevent false or erratic operation due to movement.”

MAINTAINING AN OPTICAL BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR To ensure the system continues to operate correctly: Check for visual damage regularly Check installation remains mechanically and electrically correct Check there have been no major changes to the environment such as line of sight, obstructions, reflections, strong light sources etc. Clean the system regularly Check operation of the system with regular Fault and Fire tests MAINTAINCOMMISSION INSTALLSPECIFYWHEREWHAT
