Climate Temperatures drastically change from top to bottom of a mountain. On average, temperature decreases 10 degrees Celsius for every 1,000 meters ascended. Specific changes in climate occur at different latitudes.

Soils Due to steep hills, most soils are well drained, thin, and vulnerable to erosion. Winds blowing up from lowlands deposit soil particles and organic matter on mountains.

Top regions of mountain called Alpine Tundra Climate is too harsh for trees. Tundra-like community develops. Wildflowers Mosses Succulents Low-growing plants

Animal Life The base of a mountain provides a more flexible environment for animals to live. Towards top of mountain, animals have adapted to the cold, lack of oxygen, and the rugged landscape. Mountain Goat Sheep Mountain Lions Puma Yak
