7 Back Definition a disease caused by ingestion of water contaminated by human or animal excrement, which contain pathogenic microorganisms Epidemiology Mostly in areas affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami, floods and cyclones, which can spread through contaminated water Etiology Bacteria, viruses, and protozoa (mostly bacteria, e.g. Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhi, E. coli)

8 Moringa oleifera Contains positive charged protein Bind to negative charged particle Coagulation Water purification Contain antibacterial properties Methanol Chloroform Hexane Ethylacetate Pterygo- spermin Antibacterial activity Highly Potent Chlorine Side effect

9 DisinfectantAdvantagesDisadvantages Chlorine  Very effective for disinfectant  Well-known and most widely used method for water treatment  Influence the pH value of the water  Increase the soluble residues and increase volume and metal content of the sludge  Too reactive  Has toxic effect as a chemical substance  It combines with inorganic material in water to form chloride salts Moringa oleifera  Friendly  Widely spread, esp. in tropical countries  Available and easy to store product  Allows water treatment without external dependence (pH)  Has no noxious effect on human health  The processing does not modify the pH of the water  It does not alter the water taste (unless a very high dosage is added)  purified water might still carry some (very few) pathogenic germs or microorganisms  Not too effective as chemical substances  Not common used in Indonesia

10 Comparing to Chlorine, a chemical substance, that gives side effects, Moringa oleifera is an organic substance that much less harmful, cheap, easily found and more environmentally friendly Further research is highly recommended in Indonesia either from government or institution, so that application of Moringa oleifera can give true benefits and will be widely used by people.
