2. What happened? The Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a faulty reactor design that was operated by poorly trained staff.

3. Effects on the Environment and Humans 1. Radiation 2. Affected vegetation, fauna, groundwater 3. Increase with thyroid cancer 4. Poultry was affected by radiation so farmers could not sell their meat 5. Scandinavian countries and other parts of the world were effected by the radioactive releases

5. Media Coverage The most disturbing aspect of press coverage was the willingness to accuse the Russians over covering up the true death toll. The media coverage was global for Chernobyl due to the exaggerated images and assumptions of what had happened.

6. Environmental Movement Chernobyl shaped the environmental movement due to the: 1. Its widespread throughout Europe 2. The fact they didn’t warn the surrounding countries until a couple hours later, some even 3 days after the accident occurred.
