It’s Not Just For Research Anymore Using VPS As a Dynamic Problem-Solving Tool Kim Pearson, RN, MPH
2
The Future of Medicine is… Your Smartphone? “…[E]xcept for ICUs, operating rooms, and emergency rooms, hospitals of the future are likely to be roomless data surveillance centers for remote patient monitoring.” –Eric J. Topol, Wall Street Journal
3
We Need to Be Ready Using data to drive our decisions, even day-to- day choices, prepares us for the future when data-driven medicine rules the world.
4
EMRs Can’t Always Do The Job EMRs can be incredible data management tools Can also be limited in responsiveness/ timeliness With VPS, once the data are entered, they’re accessible
5
We Use VPS In Many Ways: Track 24h readmittance rates; To understand our average LOS; OR To solve DAILY PROBLEMS
6
How Do We Use VPS to Solve Daily Problems? First application: EV D-68 outbreak Alerted via VPS LISTSERV thread in mid-August
7
2014 EV D-68 Outbreak Started seeing Minnesota cases near the end of August Created a report for PICU leaders that arrived before news was in the local media

Solving Resource Allocation Issues When we needed to use all our PRISMA or ECMO circuits at the same time, calculate the average length of time patients use the equipment to estimate how long we might tie up the equipment
11
Improve Post-Op Cardiac Care Use VPS to track post-op milestones for cardiac patients Become part of the daily patient rounding process with cardiac care team Incorporate pre- and post-op PRISM III and PIM2 scores
13
Create a Failsafe Notoriously challenging to ensure we meet our asthma care bundles—we’ve tried many different interventions When an asthma patient admitted in VPS, we can intervene with reminder to bedside nurse about completing all portions of the bundle
14
We’ve Only Scratched the Surface E-mails several times a week with ideas for new applications that use VPS data Talk to physician groups, other stakeholders— let them know what VPS can do
15
I Want to Say Just One Word to You, Benjamin. Yes, Sir. Are you listening? Yes, I am. PLASTICS. DATA.
