Hot Deserts

Deserts around the world.

Hot Deserts This is a very harsh environment...there are many issues faced by plants, animals and people... Nomad: these are people who move around for at least part of the year, usually looking for water and grass for their animals.

How do plants survive? Some plants have long roots – these reach down towards the water table and so can survive when there is no rain.

Cacti have big, thick stalks to store water. They are covered in spines to stop animals from eating them and getting water from them.

The land is a hugely important resource for everyone, no matter where they are in the world. Many people live in ELDC’s, and are suffering from hunger because; Many farms are too small to make a living Natural disasters ruin farmland There is soil erosion and desertification Many people are in poor health

Desertification When the soil is bare, it can be washed away or blown away. This is called soil erosion. If a lot of soil is eroded, to the point where it cannot be farmed, it becomes desert. This is called desertification.

There are three main causes! Too many people – growing too many crops or raising livestock Cutting down trees - Deforestation Not enough rain - Drought

How do you think we could solve desertification? Drought Deforestation Over population Work in pairs to some up with solutions!

Reducing Drought Irrigate areas of land

Reducing Deforestation Plant more trees. The roots then hold the soil together. The trees also make the soil fertile. We could also plant a shelter belt of trees around the edge of a field. This slows the wind down and stops soil being blown away.

Reduce Overgrazing 1. Limit the number of cattle kept by one family. 2. Fence off areas and let cattle graze different areas at different times.

Reducing Overcultivation. 1. Green Revolution: This is where crop yields have been increased by using fertilisers and using appropriate technology to help farmers get the most out of their land.

Reducing Overcultivation 2: Crop rotation: This is where you grow different crops each year. This is good because different crops use different nutrients, so you won’t exhaust the soil. Crop rotation can also improve soil structure and fertility by alternating deep-rooted and shallow- rooted plants.

Reducing Overcultivation. 3: Irrigation schemes: Irrigation schemes water areas of land to stop the soil from drying out. This stops the soil particles from being blown away by the wind as they are too heavy and allows for nutrients to soak down through the soil.
