4
Sugar Simple carbohydrate Three common types found in food: sucrose, fructose, and dextrose, all of which quickly metabolize into glucose (blood sugar) Glucose ingestion leads to high insulin levels, which can contribute to health problems such as diabetes 4 calories per gram of sugar If you look at the ingredients in a food product, what about the name could tell you that you're looking at a sugar?

Blood Sugar & Diabetes Risk Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans. In type 2 diabetes, either the body doesn't produce enough insulin (hormone produced in the pancreas that helps the body use glucose for energy) or cells ignore the insulin. Insulin should take sugar from the blood and give it to cells to use as energy; if glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.

Artificial Sweeteners 1 Acesulfame: “Sweet One” brand. Found in Jell-O, nondairy creamers, and Coke Zero. May cause cancer. 200 times sweeter than sugar, 0 calories. Aspartame: NutraSweet and Equal brands. Found in sodas, gum, dairy products, and medicines. May have led to an increased risk of cancer in rodents. Neotame: 7000 – 13,000 times sweeter than sugar, 0 calories. Found in baked goods, soft drinks, gum, frosting, frozen desserts, jams, fruit juice, and syrups. Similar to aspartame.

Artificial Sweeteners 2 Saccharin: Sweet'N Low brand. Found in Diet Coke. In 2008, a study at Purdue University reported that lab rats fed with saccharin consumed more calories and put on more weight and body fat than rats fed with glucose. Sweet foods may prompt the body to get ready to take in more calories, but artificial sweeteners lack calories, confusing the body and perhaps leading to eating more. May or may not be applicable to humans. Sucralose: Splenda brand. 600 times sweeter than sugar, 0 calories. Found in new versions of Diet Coke.
