3  Americans with Disabilities Act Americans with Disabilities Act ◦ The Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities.  Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ◦ Section 504 is a federal civil rights law to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability.  Family and Medical Leave Act Family and Medical Leave Act ◦ The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave due to health conditions.  Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ◦ The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that requires states to provide a "free, appropriate public education" to children with disabilities.  National Disability Resources National Disability Resources ◦ A list of other resources and organizations to focus on disability.  State Laws and Policies State Laws and Policies ◦ State laws and regulations determine who in the school setting is allowed to perform or assist with diabetes care tasks.

4  Section 504 is federal civil rights law under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It provides protection against discrimination for individuals with disabilities.  A student is entitled to a Section 504 Accommodation Plan if they have been identified and the evaluation shows that the individual has a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
