3 Veteran Student Information Students receiving Veteran benefits must:  Pursue either a degree OR certificate  Students using VA Benefits that want to pursue a dual major or a degree and certificate must:  meet with an advisor  obtain approval  complete a Dual Objective Form to justify the dual major or degree and certificate  submit the Dual Objective Form with Veteran Services to obtain approval from the School Certifying Official.

4 Veteran Student Information Students receiving Veteran benefits must:  Follow their program check sheets and take only required courses for their degree or certificate ( http://www.azwestern.edu/learning_services/degrees_and_certificates /) http://www.azwestern.edu/learning_services/degrees_and_certificates /  All Military transcripts, transcripts from other colleges and universities be submitted to AWC for evaluation when:  students using VA Benefits first apply for admissions  students enroll for classes that they will use VA Educational benefits

5 Veteran Student Information  Students must have military transcripts sent in and evaluated before taking any general electives ( http://jst.doded.mil ) http://jst.doded.mil  If transcripts are not received by the AWC School Certifying Officer within your first standard term of enrollment  enrollment will not be certified by the School Certifying Official for the following term

6 Veteran Student Information  Meet with an Advisor to create an Educational/Academic Plan (EAP)  EAP must be turned into Veteran Services in order for courses to be certified through the Veteran Affairs for payment of educational benefits  Keep majors up-to-date and inform Veteran Services of all changes in enrollment  Take required courses under 100 level in-person only (i.e. ENG 080 or Mat 081, etc.)  General Elective credit is usually covered by incoming military transcripts

8 Veteran Student Information  Students using VA Educational Benefits that receive a grade of “F" (Failure)  Students that fail a course more than twice will NOT be certified for benefits  If students who fail a course more than twice and pass the course the third time will have to pay for the course  It is recommended that the student pays the school directly for the course if it is the third attempt to avoid confusion and possible debt with the VA.

9 Veteran Student Information  ADD/DROP Policy.  During the designated add/drop period students may revise their programs by dropping classes and/or adding classes that are open.  Certain restrictions may apply.  Classes dropped during the designated add/drop period will not appear on the student’s transcript.  Check with the Financial Aid Disbursement Department.  See refund policies.

10 Veteran Student Information  Withdrawal Policy  Students may withdraw from one or more classes  After the designated add/drop period and through the first three quarters of the course  Or as specified by the Director of Admissions/Registrar or designee  Students will receive a grade of “W” on their official academic record.  Classes lasting less than an entire semester may have a different withdrawal period.  Students using VA Educational Benefits will be responsible to pay back either the school or the VA for the course.

11 Veteran Student Information  Withdrawal Policy (cont.)  Students who withdraw from any AWC course must submit a Withdrawal Form to the Admissions and Registration and Veteran Services.  Students who withdraw from courses must provide Correct last date student actually attended class and the reason for all withdrawals

12 Veteran Student Information  Students using Financial Aid have to apply for the Excessive Credit Hour Appeal in order to continue to receive financial aid  Students must exceed 80 hours in order to apply for the Excessive Credit Hour Appeal**IMPORTANT**  Grades of No Shows  Shows on Transcript as “NS”  Student will be charged for class

13 The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees/majors in one specific area while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the Business College. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known. 14 CERTIFICATES Certificate programs are designed to upgrade existing skills or provide competencies for employment. DEGREES Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree can prepare students for entry into a specific occupational area or prepare them for a BAS – Bachelor in Applied Science, an occupational transfer degree program at the university. Transfer Associate Degrees are designed to enable a student to TRANSFER to a university in order to pursue a 4yr-Bachelor’s Degree. General Education part of the AS degree Associate of Applied Science *AAS... Each Associate of Applied Science major may have different prescribed General Education requirements. Associate of General Studies AGS... Associate of General Studies Degree has it’s own unique General Education requirements. *General Education *General Education is a set of core and prescribed course of studies in higher education that are fundamental to a well-rounded college and university education. AGEC-A, AGEC-B, AGEC-S  English 101 and 102 Two classes (6 credits)  Mathematics (AS and ABus have different and higher level math required) At least one class (3 – 5 credits)  Arts At least one class (3 credits)  Humanities At least one class (3 credits)  Social / Behavioral Science At least two classes (6 – 9 credits)  Physical or Biological Science (AS has higher level science required) two classes (8 credits)  Additional AGEC courses (Each degree has additional unique requirements) Total of *35 – 39 credits

Grade of “C” or better required for graduation or transfer Know the Drop/Add week and last day to withdraw Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA Only repeat required courses with grades of “D” or “F” Grade of “No Show” will require payment Face-to-Face vs. Online Classes Remember, any required developmental course under 100- level must be taken face-to-face (i.e. MAT 071 or ENG 080, etc.) STICK TO THE PLAN (Program Checksheet) Full-time or Part-time Normally,12 + credits is considered full-time but double check Full-time may vary by department (i.e. Financial aid) Monthly Benefit might be affected if not full-time Know Your Benefits – Different rules for different chapters Create a schedule that helps you be successful Balance Obligations (work, family, friends, church, etc) Study Time (1 cr hr = 2 hrs study and 1 hour of outside research) Creating your Schedule

27 Planning for Success Planning for Success How to manage your new college schedule: Develop a calendar w/ plenty of time to study. Talk to your family, employer and friends about your new commitment of college and its priority in your life. If you are a parent, make arrangements for child care. Also, talk to your children about what your going to college will mean to them. Plan Ahead: Know your VA Chapter, Know your benefits Keep “Satisfactory Progress” with your Financial Aid Talk to each of your instructors early in the semester. Go to the Success Center for FREE tutoring Take advantage of any workshops or events on campus.
