10.1 Notes What is second-hand smoke? –When someone is smoking near you, and you inhale the smoke How many harmful substances are in tobacco? –3 What are the three harmful substances in tobacco? 1.Nicotine – the addictive drug in tobacco 2.Tar – a thick, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns (causes lung cancer) 3.Carbon monoxide – poisonous gas (smoke)

10.1 Notes Can a person smoke chewing tobacco? –No, they suck on it in their mouth Why is nicotine bad? –Speeds up the heartbeat (could cause a heart attack) –Raises your blood pressure –Causes dizziness –Causes an upset stomach

10.1 Notes How does tobacco harm the human body? –The respiratory system (breathing) – can have the lungs damaged, emphysema, you won’t be able to breathe –The digestive system (eating) – is affected by getting cavities in your teeth, gum disease, stomach cancer –The nervous system (nerves) – not enough oxygen to the brain and can cause a stroke (heart attack) –The circulatory system / cardiovascular system (heart & blood) – you can get heart disease –The excretory system (exiting the body) bladder cancer

10.2 Notes – The Respiratory System What is inhale? –Breathe in air (oxygen) What is exhale? –Breathe out air (carbon dioxide) Can your body survive without oxygen? –No What is the respiratory system? –A system of organs that gives your body oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide.

10.2 Notes – The Respiratory System What are the 6 parts of the respiratory system? 1.Nose and/or mouth 2.Lungs 3.Trachea (wind pipe) – tube for air only 4.Epiglottis – valve that moves back and fourth telling the food, liquids, and air which pipe to go 5.Bronchi – two tubes that branch from the trachea into the lungs 6.Diaphragm – the muscle below the lungs that expands and relaxes to produce breathing

10.3 Notes – Teens & Tobacco Addiction What is addiction? –When a person needs a drug physically & psychologically What is withdrawals? –When a person’s body has an unpleasant reaction when addicted to drugs (sweating, getting angry, nervous, frustrated, sleepy, tired, depressed) What can a smoker do to help them quit smoking? –Drink tea –Chew sugarless gum

10.3 Notes – Teens & Tobacco Addiction What is psychological dependence? –The brain is addicted to the drug What is physical dependence? –The body is addicted to the drug What is tolerance? –The body needs larger & larger amounts to feel the same feeling as they did the first time they tried the drug

10.4 Notes – Avoiding Tobacco What are some good reasons why kids should not use tobacco? 1.Saving money 2.Better health 3.Fresh breath 4.Smell good 5.Less allergies (sneezing, coughing, runny nose) 6.Healthy skin (less wrinkles) 7.More energy 8.Honest with friends and family

10.4 Notes – Avoiding Tobacco How can someone quit smoking? –Make a list of why they should quit. –Set small goals –Stay away from people who smoke –Chew gum, eat a healthy snack instead of smoking –Take deep breaths to calm yourself down so you do not need to have a cigarette –Exercise (this will distract you) What is cold turkey? –To stop smoking in one day and never smoke again

10.4 Notes – Avoiding Tobacco What is mainstream smoke? –The smoke that a smoker has inhaled and exhaled What is sidestream smoke? –The smoke that comes directly from the cigarette What is a passive smoker? –A nonsmoker who inhales the secondhand smoke Can a passive smoker get lung cancer? –Yes from secondhand smoke
