Barriers And Gateways Barrier: The Tendency to Evaluate “We all have a natural urge to judge, evaluate, and approve (or disapprove) another person’s statement.” Gateway: Listening with Understanding “… seeing the expressed idea and attitude from the other person’s point of view, sensing how it feels to the person, achieving his or her frame of reference about the subject being discussed”

Barriers And Gateways The greatest barrier to effective communication is the tendency to evaluate what another person is saying and therefore to misunderstand or to not really “hear” Checking the natural tendency to judge yields a better understanding of the person with whom you are communicating A better understanding of the other person’s point of view in turn helps you communicate better
