6 Motivating Others Unskilled LeadersSkilled LeadersOverused Leaders Don’t know what motivates others or how to do it Empower others May not be good at building team spirit by focusing on a few May be poor readers of others, not picking up on their needs or cues Create a climate in which people want to do their best May not take a tough stand when the situation calls for it Don’t have people under them that do their best Invite input and share ownership and visibility May be seen as providing inequitable treatment Sources: Lombardo, Michael & Robert Eichinger (2009). 7 Ethics and Values Unskilled LeadersSkilled LeadersOverused Leaders May have values that are out of sync with those of the organization Adhere to an appropriate and effective set of core values and beliefs during both good and bad times May be overly critical of those who do not hold the same values May not think about their values and don’t know how they are perceived Reward the right values and disapprove of others May go to battle based on beliefs and values that may not be appropriate Behaviors may vary too much across situations Practice what they preach May use ethics statements to close off discussion Sources: Lombardo, Michael & Robert Eichinger (2009).
