Chinese river dolphin The chinese river dolphin is only found in one river called the Yangtze River in China There are only five left, and one is in captivity csiwhalesalive.org

The Addax lives in the desert and it never drinks It gets all the water it needs from the plants it eats There are around 200 Addaxes left in the wild Addax www.ltxgamebreedingcentre.co.za

Black Rhinoceros The Black Rhinoceros is actually gray It sometimes likes to take a mud bath There are fewer than 2,000 left in the wild www.hedweb.com

California Condor The California condor has a bald head, so it doesn’t get germs when it eats The condor eats dead animals—it is a scavenger In 1982, there were less than 25 left, but today, thanks to captive breeding programs there are about 200 of them www.npca.org

Chinchilla There are two kinds of Chinchillas—the longhaired and short haired The Chinchilla lives in South America In the 1940s, fur hunters hunted them almost to extinction The short haired chinchilla is almost extinct The long haired one is making a comeback thanks to legal protection

African Elephant The African Elephant is the largest land mammal It used to be hunted for its ivory tusks There are between 400 and 600 thousand left

Peregrine Falcon The Peregrine falcon is the fastest flying bird in the world The birds were being affected by pesticides used widely over the past few years

Giant Panda The Giant Panda lives in the Chinese mountains where it eats bamboo and fruit from the trees There are only about 1000 left

Hawksbill Turtle The Hawksbill Turtles were hunted for their shells Wild animals ate their eggs They can be found on coral reefs

Hyacinth macaw The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest macaw in the world It’s the most endangered of all the Macaws There are only an estimated 2500 left

Iberian Lynx The Iberian Lynx can be found in Spain and Portugal It was widely hunted for its fur

Grand Cayman Blue Iguana The Grand Cayman Blue Iguana is the most endangered reptile on earth It lives in a tiny part of a Caribbean Island

Northern Right Whale The Northern right whale is the most endangered of all of the whales There are only 300 left in the wild

Key Deer The Key Deer are named after the Florida Keys where they can be found Hunting and development in the area in the early 20 th century left a population of only 50 deer There are about 300 now

Ocelot The Ocelot’s fur has both spots and stripes and was highly prized by hunters and fur merchants The Ocelot is now protected, but the numbers are still declining due to habitat destruction

The Arabian Oryx There are only 100 Arabian Oryxes left in the wild with more being protected through captive breeding and herding They live in desert areas in the Middle East

Przewalski’s Horse The Przewalski Horses are smaller than the horses we are used to seeing They have not been seen in the wild since 1968 They are only found in zoos and private preserves in Mongolia.

Quagga The Quagga is only found in zoos It is related to the zebras A Quagga-like creature is being bred in South Africa that will be reintroduced into the wild

Queen Alexandra’s birdwing butterfly The Queen Alexandra is the largest butterfly on the planet with a massive wingspan of 1 foot and 1 inch Captive breeding programs have helped increase the numbers and have allowed the species to be released into the wild

Snow leopard The Snow Leopard lives in cold places Fur hunters prized its fur and killed it to near extinction Even with captive breeding programs, the numbers are declining
