Means scaled reptiles. Composed of lizards, snakes, and worm lizards. Has 96% of known living reptiles.

Characterized by a flexible jaw structure, and have scales or shields. Smell with a special organ called the Jacobson’s organ.

Suborder is Lacertilia or Sauria. 4,470 different species, only 2 are venomous. Have visible ears, which are holes in the side of the head.

Suborder is Serpentes 2,920 different species, either venomous or non-venomous. Believed to hear very low-pitched sounds Have a spectacle or clear scale over their eye. Some snakes have pit organs on their face.

Smallest snakes are in the Blind Snake families. Largest snakes are Reticulated Pythons and Green Anacondas.

Suborder is Amphisbaenia 156 different species, most are fossorial. Scales are arranged in rings and separated by grooves. Sizes can range from 3.1 to 32 inches.

The IUCN lists 243 species of Squamata either extinct or at the risk of becoming extinct. 14 extinct, 70 critically endangered, 159 endangered. 1 extinct and 4 endangered in the United States.
